A little something about the project
Parakeet is an audible information device that typically mounts to a standard 42” delineator, a type of traffic safety device accompanied by a 10, 16 or 30 lb base. The sales team at PSS wanted to display the new device without having to travel or ship the 42” delineator due to headache and cost. After a few months of shipping the channelizer around, we decided to create a stand for the Parakeet.
I worked with the engineering department to laser cut the die line of the delineator where Parakeet mounts to, installed magnets in the back, created a graphic and purchased an adjustable, steel stand to hold the product up.
The first version was orange acrylic but after field testing the material was very brittle and had to recall the parts. Later we doubled the thickness and used HDPE instead of acrylic with stellar performance.
The graphic included a space where the Parakeet would magnetize to the stand behind the graphics and be incorporated into the display while allowing the sales team to pick up Parakeet without having to dismount it. Ultimately, each piece totaled to $30 for each sales representative, $20 under the assigned limit.
